As such, it is phantom auditory perception, that is, the perception of sound without corresponding vibrational activity in the inner ear. This is comparable to the phenomenon of limb and phantom pain. The perception of a phantom sound must appear for a minimum period of five minutes to be considered tinnitus. More than 90% of the population perceives time for a short duration, normally this sound which eventually disappears within a few seconds. The inner ear (the cochlea) does not necessarily trigger the tinnitus noise. For example, severing the auditory nerve is not an effective solution for reducing tinnitus, and in some cases, tinnitus perception does not decrease at all.
